Since New Year's Eve 2008, the city of Mobile has been lowering a 12-foot-tall lighted mechanical moon pie to celebrate the coming of the new year alongside performances from national musical acts. The giant moon pie descends the 34 story RSA Trustmark building at the stroke of midnight. Earlier in the evening, the world's largest moon pie is cut and served to the public as part of the festivities. This FREE event is attended by over 50,000 revelers every year.

MoonPie Over Mobile began with a vision from former City Councilman and Honorary Chairman, Fred Richardson. His idea became a reality that has been enjoyed now by hundreds of thousands of attendees.
Mobile is the home of America's first Mardi Gras celebration, and the MoonPie is the favored "throw" of the hundreds of Mardi Gras maskers riding the floats during the extensive Mardi Gras parade season. MoonPies were first thrown from Mardi Gras floats in 1952. Today, Mobile consumes more than four million MoonPies annually, and has adopted the delicious treat as an informal emblem. For the MoonPie Over Mobile celebration, this southern city teamed up with Chattanooga Bakery, the maker of the iconic MoonPie marshmallow sandwich, to create the largest electronic MoonPie as the featured attraction for its New Year's Eve celebration.
There is no age limit, just remember that due to it being a NYE celebration the activities do start and run late into the evening.
There is plenty of street parking and numerous paid parking lots available in our downtown area. The Mobile Civic Center parking lot and the GulfQuest Parking lot will have spaces available for $10 until full. There is also a Park-N-Ride shuttle option. Park your car at the Southeastern Salvage store parking lot located at 1100 West Interstate I-65 Service Road South and ride a shuttle from there to Mardi Gras Park located at Royal & Government Street in the heart of downtown for just $3 round trip. First shuttle departs the parking lot at 6pm and the last shuttle departs downtown at 1::15am. We also recommend using rideshare services such as Uber or Lyft and/or local taxi services for a safe ride there and back to your accommodations or home.
The MoonPie Over Mobile celebrations takes place in the heart of downtown Mobile which is also home to our LODA Entertainment District! There are plenty of bars, pubs, taverns, restaurants in the immediate area ready to help you quench your thirst. Beverages are allowed to be taken out of these establishments and onto the streets. Just make sure you bring the proper ID needed to purchase alcoholic beverages.
We have a plethora of dining options in downtown Mobile just ready to feed you some of their incredible food. The only difficult thing about it is deciding which one to choose!
